Resynthesize at Experimedia.net: Heart and Soul Direct LP

Experimedia.net just released an album by artist Resynthesize a.k.a. Brandon Tallent from Sacramento, California. Let me put it into some simple words: big, bigger, Resynthesize! Heart and Soul Direct is an album of full-scale electronica, melodies larger than life and wicked breakbeats like Feed Me Weird Things never happened.

But Squarepusher ain’t a good comparison. Resynthesize is much lighter, lacks any scent of jazz and includes a lot of pop-appeal. Consider the first three tracks: Warm Me Up is a hip hop-like downtempo-track that features Brandon’s typical 70s flute-synths and nice warm bass-sounds. Very smooth, very beautiful. Carnal Incarnate comes up with quite similar sounds, but they act in a different way at this track, ahm song. It’s fantastic how the flute-synths join into the melodic bass-motive the first time at 1’50”! Supersynth (great title, btw) is a drill n’ bass-revelation. There are even some referential amen-breaks. Ha! Super-fat synths, great drum-programming, fantastic melodies. Once again, there’s a slight 70s electronic music-feel that suits the composition very well. The best track on the record, mos def.

The Trials and Tribulations at position number five comes with some more sick sounds. Nice bass-synths! Resynthesize switches on his LP from breakbeat to downtempo and hip hop, and this is one of the slower tracks- although there’s a frenetic increase at the end. Clicky Clicky has a similar mood and adds some techno-references with a highly repetitive micro-loop. Last track to mention: Thinkin Though Space at number ten. Heavy grooves and a nice, baroque melody.

Heart and Soul Direct start like a hurricane and looses a bit of its’ strength after the first three tracks. Still, Brandon manages to add enough interesting sounds and harmonies to keep the listeners attention. And I bet he spent a lot of time in configuring his synthesizers. No revolutions for the entire electronic music, but an awesome trip back into 1995.
